LifeStraw, an invention for Life!

This has got to be one of the most important invention in recent years! LifeStraw is a portable water purifier. It is an award winning invention from Vestergaard Frandsen.

This European company's goal and philosophy to "develop innovative products that prevent the transmission of waterborne and vector-borne diseases in developing countries," is very noble and inspiring.

In Malaysia (and most countries in the World), we take drinking water truly for granted. Most of the daily choices we make with regards to drinking water are what or where to drink. It has never been about whether if the water is safe to drink or not.

Below, we can see how the LifeStraw helps to provide safe drinking water for all those in need.

I am very happy to find out that a device like LifeStraw exist. It must have saved countless of lives since it was introduced. Other life saving and innovative products from Vestergaard Frandsen includes the following:
  • PermaNet - Curtains and bed nets that fight vector-borne diseases such as chagas, dengue, filariasis and leishmaniasis.
  • ZeroFly Tent - "ZeroFly Tent is a disease controlling shelter making use of long-lasting insecticide impregnated materials. No other refugee tent offers this long-term disease controlling effect."

"Warning to those wearing Contact Lenses" is a Hoax

Sean forwarded this email to me. I do not know if it is true or not, so I decided to Google it. Turns out that the email is a hoax! Check out the links below.

To those who wear contact lenses, remove them when you have to attend a BBQ party or whatsoever that got to do with flames...

I heard a horrible true story about contact lenses.... It happened to a 21 year old guy, he wore a pair of contact lenses during a barbecue party. While, he was barbecuing, he stared at the fire charcoals. After a few seconds, he started to scream for help and moved rapidly, jumping up and down. No one in the party knew why... When he arrived at the Hospital, the doctor said he'll be blind permanently courtesy of the contact lenses that he had worn. Contact lenses are made by plastics, and the heat from the charcoal melted his contact lenses. So, tell all your friends.....

DO NOT WEAR CONTACT LENSES WHERE OVERHEATING AND FLAMES ARE CONCERNED... pass this message to all your friends.

Read the Numbers on Your Fruit

When I first received this email, I was curious as to what the title meant. What does it mean by "read the numbers on the fruit"? See the email below.

START EMAIL

I just found this out about a month ago and I've been an organic vegan for over four years, go figure. That just goes to say that we must all remain as students and continue to learn and learn — never stop studying and gaining new information.

Okay, so what did I learn?

I learned that sticker labels on the fruits actually tell you how the fruits have been grown — whether they were organically grown or conventionally grown with pesticides and herbicides; oh, and let's not forget about the genetically engineered fruits.

Conventional Fruit Labels
Four digits and does not start with 9
** mostly starting with the digit 4

Organic Fruit Labels
Five digits and starts with number 9

Genetically Modified Fruits
Start with the digit 8

** this is good to know because stores aren't obligated to tell you if a fruit has been genetically modified (grrr….)

Okay, so if you come across an apple in the store and it's labels 4922, it's a conventional apple grown with herbicides and harmful fertilizers. If it has a sticker 99222, it's organic and safe to eat. If it says 89222, then RUN!!!! It has been genetically modified (GMO).

So next time you go shopping, remember these critical numbers and know how to avoid purchasing inorganic and GMO fruits. Shop Safe :)

I was not sure if this was true or not, so I went to my reliable Google and search for "what does the sticker labels on fruit mean". Turns out that there are tons of articles and blog posts on this.

I am not sure if in Malaysia, they label fruits like that, but I am going to find out the next time I go to a fruit stall.
